How to Play Maze of Breth
Last updated on load. A player’s guide to the crayon maze — what it is, how to beat it, and answers to the questions people ask most.
What Maze of Breth is
Maze of Breth is a free, hand-drawn maze adventure you play right in your browser — no install, no account. The maze itself was drawn on paper by a kid game designer; the robots just built it as original crayon-style code. You steer a hero through the maze, dodge patrolling spiders, hold your breath across the danger zones, find the key, and escape a giant spider boss. A full run takes about two to four minutes, and every run ends in a shareable card.
How to play
You start bottom-left, next to a crayon shield. Move with the arrow keys, WASD, or a swipe on your phone. Grab the sword to fight spiders up close, or the bow to fire three arrows from a distance. Touching a spider costs a heart — unless you are holding a shield, which blocks exactly one hit and is then used up.
The signature moment is the OUT-OF-BRETH zone. Step into one and the screen tints while your breath meter drains over roughly two and a half seconds. Cross before it empties or you gasp and get bounced back to the zone’s entrance. You lose no heart for gasping — breath is a separate pressure from health. Find the key, unlock the door, and take on the boss: dodge its web volleys and land three hits with the sword or bow to win and reveal your run card.
The mystery tiles
Three folded-paper tiles marked with an orange question mark are scattered through the maze. Each one resolves the moment you step on it, and each deals the top card of a six-card deck that is shuffled fresh at the start of every run. The deck holds a heart, a coin, a spider that skitters straight out at you, two spare arrows, a big lungful, and a sticky webbing. Because the cards are dealt without repeating, the three tiles always give you three different surprises — and because the shuffle is new each run, the same tile rarely gives the same thing twice.
The lungful is the one worth hunting. It is stored, not spent immediately: the next time your breath meter empties inside an out-of-breth zone, you spend the lungful and get a second wind exactly where you stand, instead of gasping and getting bounced back to the entrance. A spare lungful shows as a small “+1” beside the breath meter, and it is the difference between a long zone being a gamble and being a plan. The webbing is the card to be careful with: it splatters sticky crayon web across your tile and the ones around it, and steps off a webbed tile drag noticeably — a bad thing to trigger with a spider on your heels.
Six tips for a clean run
1. Grab the sword early — a nearby spider is much easier to deal with when you can strike back. 2. Save your shield for the boss room or a spider you cannot route around; it only blocks once. 3. Do not stand still inside a breath zone. Scout the exit first, then dash in one committed run. 4. Spiders patrol short loops and leave slowing webs; wait a beat and slip past behind them rather than forcing a trade. 5. The bow lets you soften the boss from range before it closes in — three arrow hits count just like three sword hits. 6. Open the mystery tiles before a long breath zone, not after: a lungful you are already carrying is a free second wind, and a spider you popped early is one you can walk away from. And hunt for the hidden armor diamond — it does nothing for your score, but it flexes on your run card.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free? Yes. Maze of Breth is completely free and supported by ads shown between plays, never over live gameplay.
Do I need an account? No. Nothing to sign up for and nothing to download — it runs entirely in your browser.
Does it work on my phone? Yes. Swipe to move; the maze scales down to fit small screens, and every control is touch-friendly.
What is the breath meter? It is a timer that drains only while you stand in an out-of-breth zone. Empty it and you are teleported back to the entrance, but you keep all your hearts.
What do the question-mark tiles do? Each deals one card from a six-card deck shuffled fresh every run: a heart, a coin, a spider, two arrows, a spare lungful, or a sticky webbing. No card repeats within a run, so the three tiles are always three different surprises.
Is every run the same? The maze itself never changes — it is one hand-drawn level. What changes is the mystery deck and the spiders, which roam freely rather than walking fixed loops, so the route you plan and the pressure you face differ every time.
